As consumers, how do we ensure that our plates do not overwhelm the planet?
Did you know that a single serving of beef has the equivalent carbon dioxide emissions of driving a car for nearly 5 kilometres or that 23 grams of carbon dioxide are emitted as the result of the growing and production processes of a mug of coffee?
The food sector accounts for around 30% of the world’s total energy consumption and the global rearing of livestock is roughly the equivalent of the entire global transportation industry. If the global population reaches 9.6 billion by 2050, almost three planets could be required to provide the natural resources needed to sustain current lifestyles!
The 7 Day Challenge
For the seven day period from 21 – 28 February we challenge you to eat more sustainably. Find ways to buy mostly local products at the grocery store or at farmer’s markets, aim to make zero food waste, limit the consumption of animal-based products, compost leftovers, prepare more home-cooked meals and limit your takeaways. Look for recipe inspiration from the Swedish grocery retailer ICA’s Climate Right Cookbook or explore plant-based Youtube channels.
